Candy Shop Vintage: ‘On Forever 21, Splurging And Why Copycats Suck’

sidebyside

These necklaces may look familiar. I did a splurge vs. save post earlier in the summer comparing these two necklaces- one Forever 21 ($10) and the other Candy Shop Vintage ($140).

My post caught the attention of Candy Shop Vintage Owner & Designer Deirdre Zahl and prompted her to write her own post about why her necklace is more expensive and all around the better choice.

Deirdre brings up some very important points in her post that all Forever 21 frequents should see. Deirdre focuses on jewelry that you will have for a long time-not some trendy pieces you will throw away. I hope you’ll take a minute to check out her post because it is a very important topic and you will see how it can be very frustrating for independent designers and small business owners.

Splurge vs. Save: Elephant Parade Necklace

Splurge vs Save Elephany Parade Necklace

I haven’t done a ‘Splurge vs. Save’ post in two years (give or take a few months), but this deal was too good not to share. While shopping at a Forever 21 in Boston, I stumbled upon this adorable little Elephant Parade necklace. When I got back to the hotel and started browsing online, I randomly found another Elephants On Parade necklace-except it was $130 more expensive than the Forever 21 version.

Both are so adorable, so it’s a tough choice. I love everything elephant. The $140 elephant necklace would surly last longer, but the Forever 21 is still an adorable alternative.

Which would you wear??

July 2010: Splurge vs. Save

First of all, I’m back after disappearing for two weeks from the blogging world. And crawling out of my hole, I’ve brought with me a new SF series: Splurge vs. Save. It’s just a way to prove that you can have great outfits that look like you’ve stepped right off the runway and dropped a full month’s rent on one top — without spending even fraction of that. Hope you enjoy!

Look 1: A few months ago I blogged about the 2010 tie-dye trend and featured this Proenza Schouler 2010 RTW tie-dye dress costing more than $2,700, but who said you have to pay anywhere near that!? So check out this Forever 21 tie-dye dress for less than $25! Very similar, don’t ya think?

Total Cost: $4,475 vs. $98

Product Information: Splurge: Proenza Schoulder Tie-dye embroidered hem-dress from Net-A-Porter, $2,760; Giuseppe Zanotti For Balmain Black Leather heels from farfetch.com, $1,055; Bottega Veneta Patent Envelope clutch from Net-A-Porter, $660; Save: Tie-dye dress from Forever 21, $23; Black cross-over high heel shoes from Debenhams, $40; Button Clutch from Amazon, $35

Look 2: I think this outfit is perfect for wedding season. It’s conservative, girly… and just gorgeous. I’d skip a necklace and wear bold, statement earrings.

Total Cost: $2,250 vs. $116

Product Information: Splurge: Fendi Draped crepe dress from Net-A-Porter, $1,670, Hadley Strappy Sandal from Michael Kors, $295; Crytsal Drop Earrings from vivre.com, $285; Save: Emanuel Ungaro Silk-organza dress from The Outnet, $42; Report Leia Shoe from Heels.com, $54; Stone and Drape Chain Drop Earrings from ASOS, $20

*Note: Because these outfits were created in June (yes, I procrastinated this post for a month), some of the items featured may be discounted or sold out.

What do you think? Do you like the looks I’ve created? Do you have any pieces that mock more expensive designer items?
