These necklaces may look familiar. I did a splurge vs. save post earlier in the summer comparing these two necklaces- one Forever 21 ($10) and the other Candy Shop Vintage ($140).
My post caught the attention of Candy Shop Vintage Owner & Designer Deirdre Zahl and prompted her to write her own post about why her necklace is more expensive and all around the better choice.
Deirdre brings up some very important points in her post that all Forever 21 frequents should see. Deirdre focuses on jewelry that you will have for a long time-not some trendy pieces you will throw away. I hope you’ll take a minute to check out her post because it is a very important topic and you will see how it can be very frustrating for independent designers and small business owners.

Interesting! I think that as a consumer you have to take a moment to decide if a piece is something you really love and a piece that will remain a classic. In that case I would splurge. If however, it’s just a quirky fun bit of jewelry that I’ll get tire of, then I’ll go the way of inexpensive costume jewelry. While I always try to support local artists and small businesses the item still has to be worth it for me! I think this is an awesome topic to bring up!

Good point. I believe in spending more on classic pieces and less on trendy pieces. If you don’t think you will wear that neon purse in three years, don’t spend much on it. I tend to cheap out a lot and buy cheap, poorly made, less quality material goods. My husband reminds me that I if am going to wear it for a while or often, it shouldn’t fall apart soon.
As an artist and jewelry designer I have seen a huge difference in the way people shop for jewelry. Often times they are just not educated to understand what “handcrafted” or “handmade” mean. I create jewelry that will last a long time, put my heart and sweat and imagination in every piece I create. And I use eco friendly materials as often as I can. My prices may be higher than other pieces of jewelry displayed in the same store, but mine are made by hand and hours of work goes into each piece. The cheaper ones are more than likely mass produced and created in China. So do us proud and support your local artist and crafters. We appreciate it very much!
Thank you again for posting this! xo
