What’s in my RocksBox?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

Let me tell you about my new favorite way to shop and wear jewelry! What if for $19/month you could receive hand-selected jewelry just for you, wear it as much and as long as you’d like, swap it when you’re ready, and buy it if you wanted to keep it?! Well, that’s exactly what RocksBox does! It’s like the Netflix of jewelry and who doesn’t love Netflix and jewelry?

To start, you take a style survey telling RocksBox exactly what you like. Three pieces are then hand-selected just for you that you can wear together or separately. Each box averages around $200.

Then, you wear your pieces as much as you’d like and send them back whenever you’re ready-days or months later! It’s $19/month either way! If you want to purchase a piece, you always get 20% off retail price as a member.

Shipping is free both ways, so you just drop your box in the mail whenever you’re ready… Hooray for stress free shipping!

So far I’ve received one box and kept it for a week or so now just because I like wearing the pieces! Mine included this dainty little black quartz necklace, these pink statement earrings, and my favorite little gold cuff ring.

If you’d like to try out RocksBox, as a Southern Flair reader you can get a free month by signing up here!

Freret & Napoleon Pt 2: Behind the Brand

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

Named after a cross-section in Uptown New Orleans, Freret & Napoleon was created by Tiffany Langlinais in November 2013 and has since grown into a clothing and accessories brand that echos the strengthening up-and-coming attitude of the neighborhood and vibrating energy pulsating from the community.

While the oyster shells have become a trademark of Freret & Napolean, Tiffany first began the line as a clothing designer as the accessories and jewelry manifested themselves into the perfect accents.

Last year after moving from Jackson to New Orleans, Tiffany began designing her own clothes after getting a “big girl” job and being dissatisfied with the bland corporate wardrobe.

“I’ve always been a big fan of wearing fun and outrageous things,” she said. “It didn’t matter if it wasn’t matching or if it was just downright weird. I simply enjoyed the feeling I had when I knew that my outfit was truly different, bold, and made me feel fantastic.”

From that point Tiffany purchased her first sewing machine and began making pieces for herself. Within a month she found out she’d be participating in Fashion Week New Orleans.

Tiffany describes participating in Fashion Week New Orleans as one of the highlights of her year-and the year isn’t half way over yet!

“Being in the atmosphere of such driven, creative, and artistic people, I could barely keep myself together because I was so enthused by the aura that they put off,” she said. “Other people would resort to Red Bull or pixie stix, but I was solely propelled on the environment I was in.”

FWNOLA was the springboard to Freret & Napoleon and Tiffany said she knows she will be back.

She’s currently working diligently in putting together a summer capsule collection in time for Spring/Summer 2015. Staying true to their oyster statement, she is working with her newest team member -her sister- on creating one-of-a-kind hand sketched patterns to transfer to real-life fabrics.

Tiffany said she’d love to introduce a swimwear line with the prints in the future.

“I’m always looking for something different, new, and fresh, and I want to be able to provide that to those other individuals that feel the same way,” she said.

Tiffany said her favorite piece from the collection is “The Signature” necklace.

“I’ve always tried to be super resourceful and transitional in all the ways that I wear any of my jewelry and clothing and one of the great things about this piece is that I can wear it backwards,” she said. “I have one particular jumpsuit that is backless and it provides the perfect combination of edgy and straightforward when I throw on “The Signature” and swing it around to the back.” (Click here to see!)

Freret & Napolean handpicks their oyster shells from the Gulf Coast and each shell goes through a lengthy process of handcleaning then handpainting. Each shell is unique and offered on necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings and even headbands and body chains!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of styling “The Toulouse” tassel necklace-similar to “The Signature.” It has officially become my favorite necklace. See the full boho-inspired outfit here.

Huge thanks to Freret & Napolean! I’m so excited to see this company grow. Be sure to check out their new website and keep up with SF on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Pinterest!

Introducing Culture Shock’s Rani Collection

Monday, March 10th, 2014

Y’all know I’m a huge fan of this New Orleans-based ethnic jewelry company. Ever since I met Christine last year, I’ve been so amazed to see how much she’s grown Culture Shock. And she’s at it again.

In 2013 she started designing her own jewelry and has since created four collections, including her newest collection Rani. Her inspiration for this line came from Queen Rania of Jordan’s crown. She started sketching and ended up with a beautiful necklace and earrings (Anna from Running on Plenty styled the necklace here!).

Christine recently launched her Kickstarter campaign to fund a new 3D software, trade shows, and a lookbook. The video below really tells the story behind Culture Shock and its mission to appreciate and share other cultures. Plus, just seeing Christine sketch out her designs is pretty awesome (especially for me since I can’t even draw a good stick person).

I hope you’ll take a minute to check out Culture Shock and support this amazing local business. You can also see the line in action in New Orleans Fashion Week this month!

Mustard + Leopard

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

I can’t even count how many days it’s been raining lately, so I jumped in front of the camera at the first sign of a little sunlight! This is a pretty casual outfit that was perfect for a lunch duty day at school. It’s a combination of something really old with newer items.

I believe this leopard jacket is from Wet Seal circa 2005. Pretty sure I got this bad boy in high school, and it’s still one of my favorite coats. Even in 2013, I still gets so many compliments when I wear it out. Here are some similar versions here and here.

The fur knit infinity scarf from Target, the Moa Moa Chevron Bow Back sweater from Dillard’s, and the navy statement necklace are all new additions.

I snagged up this necklace at Thanksgiving lunch. My cousin has her own boutique in Lake Charles, so Thanksgiving morning turns into all my aunts and cousins digging into piles and piles of accessories in my aunt’s bedroom… usually snatching from each other and trying to find the good stuff before the others do. It can get pretty intense. I think I did really good with this find. These usually aren’t the colors I go for, but for whatever reason I was drawn to this necklace. And turns out, I really like it, and it’s more versatile than I initially thought. A win for me!

And speaking of winning… I’ve got a chance for you to win starting tomorrow! I can’t wait to share the news. Enjoy your Wednesday and keep up with SF on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Pinterest! Also, don’t forget to follow the Southern Flair Holiday Gift Guide on Pinterest!
