American Prep Fall/Winter 2014

Friday, April 4th, 2014

After a whirlwind of sending models down the runway at NOLA Fashion Week and then prepping for Birmingham Fashion Week, Nikki Manuel of American Prep finally had a few spare minutes to talk about her favorite pieces from her Fall/Winter line and her second experience at NOLAFW.

Nikki said she was pleased with the collection, and it was definitely my personal favorite show of the night!

Nikki said American Prep’s debut line was more so based on classic silhouettes. This second season, although they stayed classic, they also had cutting edge details that hold true to their aesthetic of well-constructed and well-tailored pieces that are “casual, yet refined.”

This look above was my favorite look of the night with the brown leather shorts and forest plaid turtleneck with the gold zipper detail in the back. Nikki agrees she is equally obsessed and head over heels in love with the plaid fabric. She said she’s not normally a fan of plaid, but she fell in love with the colors of chocolate brown, deep jade, hunter green, and creamy colors.

“The forest plaid, long-sleeve mock turtleneck was my foundation piece upon which all the other pieces of the collection are based,” she said. “The colors made me immediately reflect on how these same jewel tone colors are found in nature.”

Nikki was so inspired that she named the collection the ‘Autumn Jewel Collection’.

From the forest plaid print, she began to look for other fabrics that would sync with her beloved forest plaid.

“I had a significant desire to ground the line, so I thought there was nothing better than leather to give the line more warmth, heat and sex appeal!” she said.

Also, the line is Autumn/Winter, so she wanted to stay true to that (especially given this past never ending winter, she said) by utilizing stretch knits, wool blends, cottons and velvet.

Nikki says at the end of the day, she hopes American Prep’s line is well received by people in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and beyond. And I know it will be. I heard lots of people in the audience talking about how much they loved it!

Passion Lilie at Fashion Week New Orleans

Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Turns out, it’s impossible to be a blogger without Internet. It’s actually hard to be a normal human being without Internet. It’s been out for almost two weeks now, and I have no idea how I’ve made it this long. I’m finally getting it fixed today, so hopefully things can return back to normal around here.

In the midst of my Internet absence Nola Fashion Week and Fashion Week New Orleans have both been going on.

One of my favorite New Orleans-based brands, Passion Lilie, will be presenting for the first time tonight at Fashion Week New Orleans. I was lucky enough to get to talk to designer Katie Schmidt about the collection and the inspiration behind it.

Passion Lilie is a fair trade clothing line handmade in India, which offers women in remote villages safe working conditions with fair wages. Katie said the Indian culture inspires her fabric choices, which are the foundation of her line.

Katie said she wanted the line to feel feminine and flirty and wanted to play with a bit of vintage inspiration. She incorporated paisley prints and soft colors, which were inspired by the colors of the beach- from the sand and the ocean to the sky.

She said her collection is about being cool and comfortable in lightweight cotton during the New Orleans heat while still looking fab and supporting ethical fashion.

Katie, who is originally from California, said she’s definitely been inspired by the laid back, casual vibe too. However, the freedom, bright colors, and hot New Orleans weather also inspire her designs.

“New Orleans and California are very similar in some ways,” she said. “But I feel that California has much more structure and sometimes I find myself fitting between structure and flow or freedom in my designs.”

Katie said her favorite item of tonight will be The Spinnaker Pants. She’s been making these pants for the past couple of years in different fabrics picked up from her travels, but this is the first time she’s made them for others.

Katie said prepping for fashion week has been a whirlwind of excitement and has involved little sleep. She said it’s the little victories that make those sleepless nights worthwhile and make her love her job.

She was recently picked up by a retailer in New York City, and a stylist bought three Passion Lilie dresses for the upcoming movie Best of Me. How cool is that?!

Best of luck to Katie tonight at Fashion Week New Orleans! Keep up with SF on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Pinterest!

Baton Rouge Fashion Week Recap

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

I will try my best to not bombard you with tons of runway photos even though there were so many looks I loved at Baton Rouge Fashion Week. There were so many great things about the night including the body paint by Christopher Youngstar, the adorable little girls in tutus by Ms Smitty, and of course the looks by JuJu’s Boutique, iMe, Love R.O.C.S and LSU designers.

As if Baton Rouge’s first fashion week wasn’t exciting enough, there was a Mardi Gras parade going down the street, which just added to the festivities. And how cool is it for the Capitol building to be in the backdrop of the show? It was definitely the perfect location.

For me, the most exciting part was having my name on the step and repeat on the red carpet. It was such an incredible honor to be an official part of Baton Rouge Fashion Week… definitely the highlight of 2014 so far. I loved seeing it come together from the model search in January to the Big Night on Saturday. I cannot wait until next year because I know it will be even bigger and better. A HUGE thank you to OBRFW Founder Brandon Campbell and the BRFW crew (I know they worked their tails off… Julie, Chelsea, Glynna, just to name a few!) for including me in this amazing night.

And a big thanks to Diana from Foster the Fashion for the photos! What would I do without my blogger friends?

It’s my first week full week back at school since Christmas break. Thanks to snow days, teacher in-services, and sick days my schedule has been so off. I’m excited for things to finally get back into routine this week. However, a full week of school means I’m absolutely exhausted (7th graders will do that to you). I feel like I’m working on a gazillion different things and have a to-do list that’s overwhelmingly long.

I have no idea where January went and can’t believe it’s almost fashion week time!

I did want to take a minute and update you on BRFW’s Big Night next Saturday. Hopefully, I’ll be rested and ready to have some fun! Get your tickets now for $40 in advance. It will be a great night to celebrate local fashion… and hang out with me :)

5 Things I learned from Baton Rouge Fashion Week’s model search

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

This past Friday and Saturday I was so lucky to get to judge the Oneofakind Baton Rouge Fashion Week model search. We had close to 400 models audition, so it was a fantastic turnout. I also got to sit along side some amazingly creative ladies during the search which made it that much better! Below are 5 very important life lessons I learned from this experience.

1. Walking is complicated.

I never knew how bad I was at walking until this model search. It really is an art. Some people have it and some don’t. I’m definitely in the “don’t” category. After sitting for a few hours at the table, I analyzed my every movement as I walked outside. I give my model walk a 2 out of 10. I’m more of an awkward baby calf.

2. Stare people down to get what you want.

The models who stared down the judges proved they meant business. They were serious. They may have been scared and uncomfortable, but they owned that runway. And you can bet I’m going to use this tactic in my everyday life on everyone from middle school children to anyone who tries to get in my way! (Also, bonus points to the two guys who winked at the judges… another very good way to get what you want.)

3. Be confident.

I don’t even hardly walk to the mailbox without makeup on. So props to all the girls who were comfortable enough in their own skin to get judged without any make up. You, my friends, are brave ladies.

4. Baton Rouge has so many creative, inspiring people.

A few years ago when I was living in New York, I would have never dreamed Baton Rouge could inspire me the way the City does. But every day from bloggers and local designers, I am so surprised. While sitting at the judging table with Bethany Imhoff (managing editor at InRegister magazine), Brittany Harris (publicist/event planner at B. Harris Agency), Elle Marie (fashion writer for The Rouge Collection), and Chelsea Brasted (@brnola | Times-Pic entertainment reporter), it was so interesting to hear how they live out their creative sides right here in Baton Rouge. You don’t always need a big city to be happy, inspired, and driven.

5. Get out and do something that scares you.

At the beginning of the search, I swear I was more nervous than the models. As a blogger, it’s easy to get stuck behind the comfort of my computer (I mean, I didn’t even attach my name to my blog until a year into blogging), but it’s an amazing feeling getting to BE a blogger out in the community. If you’re a blogger too, don’t be afraid to reach out to people and represent your city well.

And as for the models, I know majority were absolutely terrified too. But they did something out of their comfort zone, and it’s an amazing life experience to do something that scares you and to try new things because you just never know what can come from it.

A huge thank you to OneofaKind BRFW for letting me judge! I can’t wait till Baton Rouge Fashion Week (Feb. 10-15)! Follow along with #obrfw and keep up with SF on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Pinterest!
