Heart Sunglasses from Nordstrom

Photos by Katie Hope

Good morning! Today, I wanted to introduce you to Collard Queens Chic Boutique. This boutique was dreamed up on a front porch between two friends, Robin and Ginny, who wanted to bring their customers affordable fashion with a southern flair.

Collard Queens offers dresses, skirts, shorts, tops, and accessories all with southern charm. Some of my favorite items include these khaki lace shorts and this sea foam maxi dress- both perfect for the hot summer!

And of course I love this ‘Spot on Derby’ dress! I thought my big floppy hat and sweet tea gave it the perfect southern touch, don’t ya think? This dress is so versatile for day or night. Dress it down with a pair of sandals or up with heels and more accessories. Plus, the adjustable straps make it fit perfectly!

And the really great news is this week one lucky SF reader can win a $25 giftcard to Collard Queens Boutique! This giveaway is open to US residents only. Winners will be announced next Wednesday. Good luck!

Good morning! The real title of this post should be “That time my photographer and I almost got murdered by Robin Hood with a machete.” Because that’s exactly what happened when we were on the levee/railroad tracks trying to beat the sunlight to take these photos. A raggedy “Robin Hood” and his pals run out of the woods (with a dog wearing a sweater and one girl wearing cat ears) literally carrying knives and machetes. It was definitely the scariest/weirdest thing I’ve experienced as a blogger. These guys and gals run at us, jump in our photos, then crowded around until my photographer was brave enough to tell them to leave. She definitely doubled as my bodyguard! They finally carried on down the tracks and we hurried to jet out of there to ensure we didn’t get kidnapped and forced to live in the woods/murdered. Seriously.

Passion Lilie at Fashion Week New Orleans

Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Turns out, it’s impossible to be a blogger without Internet. It’s actually hard to be a normal human being without Internet. It’s been out for almost two weeks now, and I have no idea how I’ve made it this long. I’m finally getting it fixed today, so hopefully things can return back to normal around here.

In the midst of my Internet absence Nola Fashion Week and Fashion Week New Orleans have both been going on.

One of my favorite New Orleans-based brands, Passion Lilie, will be presenting for the first time tonight at Fashion Week New Orleans. I was lucky enough to get to talk to designer Katie Schmidt about the collection and the inspiration behind it.

Passion Lilie is a fair trade clothing line handmade in India, which offers women in remote villages safe working conditions with fair wages. Katie said the Indian culture inspires her fabric choices, which are the foundation of her line.

Katie said she wanted the line to feel feminine and flirty and wanted to play with a bit of vintage inspiration. She incorporated paisley prints and soft colors, which were inspired by the colors of the beach- from the sand and the ocean to the sky.

She said her collection is about being cool and comfortable in lightweight cotton during the New Orleans heat while still looking fab and supporting ethical fashion.

Katie, who is originally from California, said she’s definitely been inspired by the laid back, casual vibe too. However, the freedom, bright colors, and hot New Orleans weather also inspire her designs.

“New Orleans and California are very similar in some ways,” she said. “But I feel that California has much more structure and sometimes I find myself fitting between structure and flow or freedom in my designs.”

Katie said her favorite item of tonight will be The Spinnaker Pants. She’s been making these pants for the past couple of years in different fabrics picked up from her travels, but this is the first time she’s made them for others.

Katie said prepping for fashion week has been a whirlwind of excitement and has involved little sleep. She said it’s the little victories that make those sleepless nights worthwhile and make her love her job.

She was recently picked up by a retailer in New York City, and a stylist bought three Passion Lilie dresses for the upcoming movie Best of Me. How cool is that?!

Best of luck to Katie tonight at Fashion Week New Orleans! Keep up with SF on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & Pinterest!

Happy Mardi Gras!

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

It’s my favorite time of year to be a Louisianian! It’s right up there with football season. Even though my Mardi Gras break got cut down to two days thanks to crazy snow days, I still plan to enjoy some parades! I went to one last weekend and got nailed in the head with beads, so I will try to do better this weekend.

This outfit isn’t something I’d wear to a parade, but I loved the green zipper and this is the time of year I try to see how many different ways I can style purple, green, and gold. I bought this dress on sale at Versona a few weeks ago for less than $30. My mom also snagged these ankle boots at Stage for less than $3. And this Charming Charlie green statement necklace was less than $15. I love when I can feel fancy for under $50!

Enjoy your Tuesday and don’t forget to enter to win a free registration for the Baton Rouge Color in Motion 5k!
