Here’s a look at the NEW Southern Flair Tailgate Collection! This is a curated LSU game day-inspired collection by me that you can shop directly from the blog!
So what is the Tailgate Collection?
The collection is made up of 5 pieces — three dresses and two original tees all available right here on Southern Flair!
Yep, you can shop directly from the blog now just like a regular retail store! This is, however, a limited-time & limited stock collection. There won’t be any restocking this specific collection – once the items are gone, they’re gone!
I did have SO much fun creating this collection and acting as a buyer AND designer for the first time to really curate something specifically for Southern Flair that I thought you guys would truly love and get excited about! I know we all love football season, so what better time to launch?!
I can’t really pinpoint when this idea first developed. I’ve always had interest in retail — but never worked in retail directly.
After working with so many boutiques on the back end (social media, BR Fashion Council, etc.), I have SO much respect for those women who don’t just work in retail, but who RUN their own boutiques.
I stressed out over just curating five items — I can’t imagine a FULL store! Imagine keeping inventory, keeping the store fresh and always changing, constantly planning new photoshoots — omg! Serious RESPECT!
But for my blog, I’m always coming up with new big (mostly crazy) ideas and thinking of new directions and ways I can evolve. That’s basically how the BR Fashion Council came about, how Fall Fashion Fest became thing and now this! Just an idea that I was crazy enough to try out.
I do have to say that I was definitely my biggest obstacle throughout this whole project. I went back and forth between “this is the best idea EVER!” to “this is the worst idea EVER!” haha
My fear of the whole thing got in my way more than I’d like to admit! I procrastinated a ton and finally just had to accept that it’s now or never and there was really no turning back once I made initial investments.
I’ve been sharing outfits and products for almost 8 years here with you guys, so this was just my way of really picking out what I truly love and something that I could curate myself — and what better way to start than with football season?!
Nothing gets me more excited than purple & gold, so I knew this was the BEST time to launch my first collection here on Southern Flair.
The Process of Curating The Collection:
So I had two main focuses for this collection – (1) Sticking to a color scheme and (2) Picking loose-fitting flowy fabrics.
Sticking to a Purple & Gold Color Scheme:
There are a bazillion different shades of purple and yellow. You have light purple, heather purple, dark purple, lilac, violet, etc, etc. And then aaaalll the yellows and golds.
It was a #1 priority to pick items that had similar shades of purple and similar shades of yellow. I wanted the collection to clearly be a “collection” — not just randomly picked items that could be considered game day.
As I found items I loved, I separated their photos into different folders on my computer based on color schemes. Then, I ultimately picked the one that was the truest to LSU’s colors.
I went with the deeper purple and a mustard-yellow/gold. (vs. the lighter yellows, variations of purple, etc.)
There were so many bright yellow pieces that I LOVED, but they didn’t fit in like I wanted, so they got cut.
Then, I narrowed it down to my top three dresses and designed the two original tanks based on the same color schemes and viola! The items were picked!
Picking Loose-Fitting Flowy Fabrics
You know how hot it gets on game day. No one wants heavy fabrics or something fitted.
The paisley dress and off-the-shoulder dresses are 100% polyester — and all three dresses are VERY loose fitting.
The paisley and off-the-shoulder are also lined giving you that extra piece of fabric that can hopefully conceal the sweating on game day (yep, that was seriously a decision maker lol).
The tie-die dress feels just like a big t-shirt. It’s so soft and loose fitting as well.
The ‘Mike is My Spirit Animal’ tank can fit you however you’d like — if you want it to be form fitting, size down. If you’d like it to be looser, size up. I’m wearing a size medium just for comfort.
The ‘Tailgate Krewe’ boxy crop fit is also incredibly flowy — the fabric is really flimsy and lightweight, which I LOVE! It barely touches your skin — so again, sweat proof! (ok, not really… it’s Louisiana. Who are we kidding? But it’s cooler than most tops!)
