I got this little ruffled black dress from Target a few years back in college. I’m not sure if it’s because I weighed 10 pounds less or because my morals were more questionable at the time, but either way that dress is way too dang short to wear now.
I really like its ruffles and didn’t want to get rid of it in my major closet clean out before my move South, so I kept it and decided to pair it under a longer skirt to make it more appropriate. I think the trick when layering a skirt over a dress is to make sure the skirt is loose fitting so that the dress isn’t visible under the skirt. In this case, the thicker fabric of the skirt helped to hide the ruffles and lace even better.
Other tips for styling a dress that’s too short:
- Pair it with leggings or tights
- Wear flats or kitten heels
- Wear a layering dress under it

Great call on the longer skirt over the dress! I have a couple of dresses that are just a tad too short and so I wear them with tights or leggings when it’s cooler out and gym shorts underneath them in the summer (the old school girl trick still works). Even if its short at least I know I’m covered
Oh my gosh, I love this post! I have the exact same thoughts on sooo many “dresses” (/shirts?) in my closet! This is such a great idea. Thanks for sharing!!
