As you know, September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s estimated that more than 15,500 women will die in the US from ovarian cancer this year, according to OvarianCancerAwareness.org.
Ovarian cancer is considered a “silent killer” because its symptoms are often so subtle. Many women don’t receive treatment until the disease has already begun to spread. But one organization — Teal Toes — has made raising awareness its one and only mission.
It works like this:
Since teal is the color of the ovarian cancer ribbon and since teal toenails aren’t that conventional, Teal Toes figured painting your toes with teal polish would spark conversation, which would help spread the word and lead to increased awareness. Pretty good idea, huh?
“Painting toenails teal, the Ovarian Cancer color, starts the conversation about the signs of this whispering killer,” said Carey Fitzmaurice, founder of Teal Toes and a four year survivor of Ovarian Cancer. “The conversation can save lives. Women diagnosed at an early stage have a much higher five-year survival rate than those diagnosed at a later stage. Fewer than 20 percent of Ovarian Cancer patients are diagnosed early.”

I first heard of Teal Toes last summer when I was interning for Beauty Launchpad magazine and was asked to write a piece on them for the September issue. Since then, the Teal Toes Web site has really grown, and they have tons of new teal polishes listed this year.
The polishes range from $1 to $8 and can be bought at Ulta, Target, Sally Beauty Supply, drug stores and nail salons.
Diamond Cosmetics is donating 25 cents to ovarian cancer research for each bottle sold. Its version — Don’t Teal My Heart Away — sells for $6.50.
Other teal polishes:
OPI Teal the Cows Come Home, $5.44
Color Club Bizerk Turk, $6.50
Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Blue Streak, $3.99
So what are you waiting for? Go get that last summer pedicure before we hide our feet away in boots for the winter. If you have your own blog, you can also help spread the word by placing one of these Teal Toes logos on your site:
