The Happy Hour Club tried TWRL Fitness, which is a pole, arial and bungee fitness studio in Baton Rouge. We recently added more group fitness classes into our monthly meet-ups — and this class seemed like the perfect way to kick it off!
As a happy hour club, what better class to start with than a sassy pole dancing class?!
Many of us in the group want a workout routine and want to try new places, BUT we don’t want to go alone! So now, we host private classes at various gyms and studios around Baton Rouge. This allows us to try a class in a stress-free, fun way! (Join our group here!)
INITIAL THOUGHTS ABOUT TWRL:
This is going to be super embarrassing.
I’m going to be really bad at this.
I can’t dance, and my sexy level is zero.
Haha these were all thoughts that were in my head going into the class, and I know I shared these thoughts with a lot of the ladies.
This class will take you out of your comfort zone for SURE, but you have to be willing to let go and be there for a good time. Also as a beginner, accept that you probably look WAY unsexy (the opposite of how you want to feel on a pole, right? lol)
It also helps to know that everyone is only worried about themselves too — and not watching you.
OUR TWRL CLASS:
TWRL offers regular classes that you can sign up for, but they also host private sessions that make great bachelorette parties or fun nights with your friends.
We had a private class, and most of us had zero pole dancing or arial fitness experience. They split us into two groups — one group on the pole and one on the hammock and hoops. Then we switched.
The instructors knew we didn’t have any experience, so they let us play around just have fun. They taught us some basic moves and let us try our best. A LOT of laughing was involved.
HOOP + ARIAL HAMMOCK
This was probably my favorite part of the class, and something I’d be willing to try again and get better at. Our instructor taught us how to get in the hoop and do a couple simple moves. We took turns trying it out, and she stood close by to help us.
I was surprised by how much I liked the arial hammock. I’ve seen people do it before and think OMG they’re going to fall and die, but you really are safely wrapped in there — and it’s all about trusting yourself and knowing you’ve got yourself.
POLE FITNESS
The good news is the pole SPINS, which makes it much easier for beginners. Babs, the owner, taught this part of class. We did some basic moves and twirls. We even spun around a few successful times haha. A couple people even climbed to the top (overachievers!)
Babs took it slow with step-by-step instruction, then we were able to put some moves together.
We were all barefoot since we were newbies, but they do let you wear heels once you get more advanced.
One thing to know going in — you’ll bruise. You’re squeezing the pole SO tight with your legs, that it will leave a mark. So just be prepared! It’s totally normal though.
What I didn’t expect was how much of a workout it really is. I was SO SORE the next day. It’s a full body workout that can definitely get you toned if you stick with it. Plus, you’re having fun and working on certain moves so you don’t even realize how strong it’s making you — it’s just a fun way to work out!
