Sugaring Hair Removal 101 with L.A. Bikini in Baton Rouge

There’s a new hair removal spot in town! L.A. Bikini is a new sugaring hair removal studio in Baton Rouge on Bluebonnet Ave. I’ve been in for my first visit, so I’m excited to share with you ALL the questions I had about sugaring.

I sat down with Leighton Odom, the Director at Operations at L.A. Bikini to ask things like… What is it? Who’s it for? What are the benefits? Does it hurt?

I’m someone who has stuck to razors and waxing for most of my life until I got my first laser treatment two years ago. Now, I’m officially on the sugaring train.

What is L.A. Bikini?

L.A. Bikini is a sugaring hair removal studio… only. So like Raising Canes has one love. L.A. Bikini has one love: sugaring.

What is sugaring?

Simply put, it’s the removal of unwanted hair by applying a sugar paste that goes on cool, comes off easily and leaves the skin smooth. The sugar is all natural and all organic since it’s made from only 3 ingredients — sugar, lemon and water.

Treatment areas include anywhere there’s unwanted hair. (Bikini, brows, underarms, legs, arms, face, etc.) See a full list of services here.

What are the benefits of sugaring?

Besides it being organic and for everyone and all hair types, sugaring is a natural exfoliant. Wax rips the surface layer of your skin, but sugar doesn’t attach to your skin. It only attaches to the dead skin, so really you’re getting your hair removed and an exfoliant.

Sugaring can eliminate and prevent ingrown hair, treat skin problems ranging from keratosis and eczema to psoriasis, and improve skin tone and texture. Because it’s natural and gentle, sugar paste hair removal works without burning your skin, damaging cells, scarring or promoting cross-contamination.

Who is sugaring for?

Sugaring can be for everyone with all hair types and colors. It’s not like laser treatments that can only work with dark-color hairs. Sugaring can work with light and thin hair, plus dark, thick and coarse hair. Sugaring can also work on all areas where you have hair growth - face, legs, bikini, underarms, etc. It’s great for anywhere you have unwanted hair.

Why sugaring over wax?

Instead of hot wax that could have chemicals and irritate your skin, sugaring is applied to skin and it goes down into the follicles and pulls directly from the root. So it’s a clean pull every time. I personally found the sugaring to be less painful than wax as well. The process is more fluid vs the painful stripping away of the hair with wax.

Is sugaring permanent?

Sugaring can lead to permanent hair reduction over time. You’re basically getting those deep-rooted hairs in your first visit, then you’ll notice the hair growth is minimal. It won’t be as thick or coarse. Plus, with sugaring you don’t have to wait as long between services. You can go in with 5-7 days of hair growth. Since you’re not going through that whole growth cycle again, this causes more permanent hair reduction.

L.A. Bikini also offers a Savvy Girl Membership for those who are on the quickest path to permanent hair reduction. It provides frequent treatments at a discounted price, so be sure to ask them about it!

How long should you wait between visits?

L.A. Bikini recommends at least 5-7 days between services. They can pull the hairs as long as it’s a grain of rice.

How should you prepare for a visit?

To get the most of your visit, you only need 5-7 days of hair growth. There’s no such thing as too much hair either. The main thing is don’t apply anything like lotions or oils to the treatment area before since the sugar won’t be able to grip as well.

What about aftercare?

Don’t exfoliate for 48 hours after your service. This gives your pores time to close to prevent irritation.

L.A. Bikini also offers a full line of products:

    • Mud Puddle - This is great for pulling the dirt, oil and toxins out of your skin. It cleanses your pores and maintains the texture in your face. *All first time first Brazilian clients get this complimentary
    • Salt Smoothie - This is their salt scrub made with dead sea salt and rejuvenating hydration lotion. It’s great for the larger and less sensitive areas like the legs, chest, back.
    • Sweet Cheeks - This is their sugar exfoliate that’s used for the more sensitive areas like the face and Brazilian.
    • Salt Spring - This is another exfoliant that you can mix with whatever you want like coconut oil or your own body wash.
    • Phenomen-all - This is a skin repair cream. It helps with dry skin, tones and texture and color in your skin. It treats stretch marks, acne scares and dry patches.
