Our Master Bedroom “Before” + Our Plans!

After a year of living in our home, we’re FINALLY making progress on the Master Bedroom! Here’s our “Before” + our plans to redecorate.

We were lucky when we moved in last March 2020 that our house didn’t need a ton of work. The world shut down the same weekend we moved in, so we couldn’t do much even if we wanted to. Plus, we were busy planning a wedding. We did a few things like built a new fence, added new door knobs, installed some new light fixtures, etc.

But the one room that REALLY needed some work was the Master Bedroom. We’ve left it as-is for a year now with a hodgepodge of our old furniture… and even with one last unpacked box.

I’ve been adding to a Pinterest board for over a year now, but I couldn’t ever commit a particular color scheme or pieces of furniture.

I wanted to decorate in a way that was different than I ever had before. I wanted to play off the pool/tropical vibes in the back yard, and make the room more of an oasis/escape. I also knew I was entering a phase where I no longer wanted all black furniture or all white furniture.

I’m starting to gravitate toward bedrooms with non-matchy bedroom suites.

I also wanted a space that both Michael and I would both enjoy - so not too feminine.

To get the ball rolling AND to connect the bedroom to the pool/patio area, we installed French doors first.

My dad came in town for a few days and he and Michael took out the window and put in the doors! They’re amazing. And in the springtime, it’s the perfect weather to have the doors open. The only thing now is that we have to watch Clementine… she likes to bring sticks, rocks and gumballs into bed from the backyard.

Our next step from here is choosing a paint color and new floor. We’re thinking lighter walls with more of a grey wood floor. That carpet has GOT TO GO.

So let’s talk furniture + decor…

I’m still super inspired by our tropical-themed wedding that happened on our back patio, so I know we will have a gallery wall with our wedding photos. I wanted to play off the pinks and blues from our wedding with our furniture and decor.

We plan to recover a bench at the end of our bed with navy velvet fabric. It has wood legs, so a little different than the gold one pictured here for inspo.

I want a space with a lamp, ottoman and small table to create a cozy reading corner.

My biggest decision has been the style of the bed. I can’t decide if I want something that’s wood or a cream/beige fabric that you see here. This is TBD, and I will most likely wait until after the floors are installed to make a decision.

I also haven’t committed to new dressers… again it’s a decision between going with wood or something else white.

As much as I’d like to do everything at once, I know I’ll likely do it one thing at a time and make decisions as I go.

So far we do have the new nightstands, a few pieces of art, the jute rug, and the accent chair.

And that’s where we’re at! I’ll be sure to keep you updated over on Intastories, and of course I’ll share the finished room here on the blog.
