One Word for 2019
Do you pick a “Word of the Year” each year? Choosing one word is something I’ve done for several years now, and I’m pretty proud to say I’ve consistently stuck with it!
The idea is to anchor your entire 365 days to a word that you can keep coming back to when you need a reminder of what you’re trying to achieve or focus on.
My past words included self-discipline, connect and discomfort.
2018 Reflection:
So before we get into 2019’s magical little word… I’ll catch you up on my 2018 word — discomfort.
Man oh man, what a year of discomfort. My biggest intention was to get OUT of my comfort zone, and I believe I did that 100%.
I left my full-time job to run my own business, so if that ain’t uncomfortable then I don’t know what is!
I also trained for my first full-marathon… and there’s nothing comfortable or pleasant about that!
Finally, I experimented with new offerings like workshops and my Goals with Action mastermind group. As someone who taught middle school students for years, teaching adults (business owners at that!) is a whole other uncomfortable ballgame.
Overall, I feel like I put myself out there more, which wasn’t always comfortable… like getting more on video, hosting happy hour meet-ups and planning bigger BR Fashion Council events.
I plan to let this word stick around this year too. For the growth and plans I have, being uncomfortable is a daily part of that. So cheers to 2018 and that awesome word for pushing me through.
2019 ONE WORD: HOW
My word this year is a question….. HOW?
Every year I’ve come up with these really complex meanings for my word and how it fits in all aspects of my life… so this year I want to keep it simple.
How is such a simple question word.
And really, we don’t ask it enough. When we encounter problems, obstacles or new ideas throughout the year, we tend to immediately think “nope, it can’t be done” or “IDK how to do that, so no.”
And at that point, we aren’t growing, learning or experimenting.
So my goal is to ask myself HOW more this year.
I let so many ideas go to waste because I don’t take the time to think how can I do that? Or how can I make that happen? How can I get from point A to point B? How can I reach that goal? How can I make that work? How can I do that better?
I feel like there’s so much possibility if we take the time to simply think HOW.
Asking yourself HOW means you believe there’s a way. You want to learn. You don’t want to write it off as impossible.
It’s a positive way to think about overcoming your roadblocks that are stopping you.
The word turns you into a problem-solver -a positive problem-solver who sees possibility instead of a dead-end.
