You Geaux Girl: Kristen Binning Hosts Baton Rouge Painting Classes + Creates Art That Flows

Meet Kristen Binning - a local Baton Rouge artist who’s known for her work with alcohol inks and creating art that flows — and for her fun group classes where she teaches you how to do the same.

She paints primarily with inks, but even when she’s used acrylics, the theme is that there’s always movement.

She’s even worked this into her branding and social media as #artthatflows.

“It’s like you’re watching a freeze frame of water flowing across the canvas,” she said. “It’s like you snapped a pic while it was moving.”

Kristen is totally self-taught and has played with several mediums and textures.

“The oil paintings just really challenged me and gave me the looks I wanted,” she said. “Very bold colors but always a light flowy feel.”

Kristen says she gets her inspiration from water.. whether that’s how the light plays into waves at the beach or a even puddle.

But when it comes to inks on the canvas, it takes practice.

“Inks are different that paint. You can’t control as much,” she said.” So while I might be inspired by dark blue or garnet colors next to it, it may end up black.

She aims to have a cohesive design on the page that lets each color be its own color while they also flow together.

You can also take fun step-by-step group classes and try out painting with alcohol inks yourself.

She has several coming up this fall at Three Roll Estate (see her schedule here)

These classes are beginner-friendly, and Kristen prepares everything you need to leave with something you love.

She provides you with a workbook and videos — and of course she’s there to instruct you as you go.

“It’s suppose to be night out,” she said. “We’re limited on our nights out. So think of it not as a ‘workshop’ but as a fun night out with food and drinks.”

Kristen can also bring the fun to your home or venue anywhere in the Baton Rouge, New Orleans or Lafayette areas.

As the host, you pick from her ever-expanding list of projects. Kristen provides the food, drinks and everything you need for your art project.

They’re in a gallery format on her website for you to “see” up close and even see them styled in a space.

Kristen is all about helping you find or create the right piece for your space.

She’s even been known to bring her artwork to clients’ homes and let them hold on to it for the weekend so they can see it in different light throughout the day.

“If you can do it with paint chips, you can do it with art,” she said.
