I don’t get crafty often, so when I do it’s most likely for a holiday, Mardi Gras or our other Louisiana favorite — football season.
Floppy hats with writing on the brim were everywhere this summer. With phrases like “Rose All Day” and “Do Not Disturb,” these made the perfect beach vacation accessory. Many of these hats could cost as much as $100, so today I went the easier and cheaper way of a DIY!
With just about an hour of my time and $20, I recreated the floppy hat trend with an added football twist. We’ve still got plenty of hot LSU game days ahead, so this hat will definitely come in handy throughout the season.
Plus, with fall merchandise hitting the shelves, you can snag a summer floppy hat at a great price right now!
What you’ll need:
- Floppy hat with a wide brim (I got mine at Forever 21 for $14)
- Sharpie or pen
- Sequin Trim (in the color of your choice)
- Glue Gun OR Fabric Glue
- Scissors
First, write the word or phrase of your choice on the brim using a sharpie.
Starting with your first letter, add about an inch of glue tracing your handwriting. Lay the sequins flat facing all the same direction on top of the glue and press down.
Continue to add small amounts of glue tracing your outline and pressing down on the sequins until you’ve created your word.
Be sure to put small amounts of glue down (about an inch at a time) to avoid your glue drying too quickly.
Depending on your word, you should be able to string most of your sequins on without cutting. However, on some letters, you’ll need to cut your trim to keep from overlapping your sequins.
