I’ve wanted to make bath bombs for a WHILE but I couldn’t ever quite think of a Louisiana spin to put on them — until Mardi Gras! So check out these DIY Surprise King Cake Baby Bath Bombs!

That’s right — there’s a plastic baby inside just like in a King Cake!

And you can even use cinnamon essential oils if you’d like (like I did with this sugar scrub) for a King Cake scent!

I have a NEW respect for people who make bath bombs! Wow… who knew it was such an art! But the GOOD thing about making your homemade bath bombs for yourself, is it’s not SO much about how good they look — as long as they work and they smell good, right? So don’t get frustrated with these bad boys!

Plus, it’s really fun! With Valentine’s Day so close too, this could be a fun DIY project for you and your girlfriends to try one night while eating snacks, drinking wine and watching 1990s rom coms!

I did A LOT of research on making bath bombs leading up to this post… and found A LOT of different suggestions. I’ll include what worked for me, but this is definitely not the only way to go about it!

Selecting your mold:

There’s a lot of debate on stainless steel molds vs silicone molds vs plastic molds.

I went with the two-part spherical stainless steel mold because I was just making round bath bombs. I heard these worked better vs the plastic ones somewhere on the internet (a reliable source, I’m sure lol).

But if you’re making various shapes, I read a silicone mold would be easier to deal with.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil (or coconut oil)
  • 1-2 tablespoons essential oils (I used cinnamon leaf)
  • Soap Coloring (I used purple + green)

*Note: The citric acid was the HARDEST ingredient for me to get my hands on. I ended up finding it in the canning section of Wal-Mart. It’s also available on Amazon here.

Extras:

  • Bath Bomb Mold (here’s the one I used)
  • Plastic King Cake Babies
  • Bowls for mixing
  • A whisk

Directions:

1- Mix together baking soda, epsom salt and citric acid. Separate mixture into two separate bowls.

2- Mix together wet ingredients – essential oils, olive oil and coloring. Do this step twice — once for your green mixture and once for your purple mixture.

3- Whisk your wet mixtures into the dry ingredients. Repeat this for your second bowl.

4- Grab a handful of mixture and pack it into one side of the mold. You can get creative here and mix both colors if you’d like!

5- Put the King Cake Baby on top.

6- Pack in the other side of the mold with mixture. And put the two sphere halves together.

7- Remove any excess mixture that may have slipped out. Let sit overnight or for at least 8 hours!

And that’s it! How fun are those?! This will be one good way to wind down after Fat Tuesday!!
